Why did you go into massage therapy?

To be honest, massage therapy wasn’t the first thing on my list of career choices. Not because I didn’t want to do it, but because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. After moving out from my childhood home, graduating college and quitting my job, all within a span of 3 months, I found myself a little bit lost, as every 20-something year old is.

So I went back to the most basic question.

“What do you want to do?”

I wanted to help people heal - that was the core of it.

It took me a month of being unemployed to do a bit of self realization and even then, I don’t think I realized to what extent, how massage therapy would impact my life now.

I was searching around the internet about different careers, and what it would take to get there. That was when I ran into the National Holistic Institute of Massage Therapy. On a whim, I decided to take a tour, go to orientation, and join them for one of their classes. It was fascinating, incredibly different than what I expected in a way. The energy that was within the school was peaceful and everyone there had the same goal which was to help each other. With that, I took a leap of faith.

I went in to massage therapy for the same reason I was a Psychology major — I wanted to heal myself so that I might be able to heal others. Throughout the year I was in massage school, I met many people from all walks of life with various different beliefs. Through my colleagues, I was taught the ultimate form of compassion and empathy. Understanding people and meeting them where they are at with no expectations helped me meet some of the best people out there.
